Merchant Tools // Activating Products Online

Best Practice for how to activate your products online in a Google friendly way

When activating products on your eCommerce site there are many different features you can use to make the product informative and inviting to the consumer. This article covers the key features to make your products compatible with Google standards.

Use the points below as a guide when activating products online.

    1. Mark your Product as Active

Open up Merchant Tools, and navigate to Product Management > Products Find Fast

On this page, you can filter in different ways to find the product you want to activate.

Click on the Item Code to open the required product.

Firstly, select the tick box to Make Product Available Online

This will automatically tick the option for Pre-Launch / Pre-order as well. Unless the product is Prelaunch or Pre-order, it is good to get into the habit of unticking this box immediately.

    2. Name your Product

Some information is fed through to your website from Citrus-Lime Cloud POS, such as the Product Name, Brand, Price and Season

However, you should consider changing the Product Name on your website to make it Google-friendly

The best way to name your product is by using the following format: -

Season + Brand + Style Name + Gender* + Material** + Product Type in Colour

*/** Optional: Use if considered pertinent to the product in question.

    For example: -

2019 Giant Defy Advanced 2 Men's Carbon Road Bike in Black

Note: Colour can be interchanged depending on the type of product i.e. flavour.

This is the above example as shown in Merchant Tools: -

    3. Assign Categories to the Product

You now need to assign categories to the product.

The first is the Primary Category; this doesn't need to perfectly match the product in question.

Use the drop-down menu to select the most relevant category, as shown in the image below: -

Use the drop down to select the Google Category. This is the information that is required by Google.

This needs to describe the product as closely as possible. Select the Age, Gender and Primary Colour of the item.

Once that is complete, ensure that you hit Save at the bottom of the page.

4A. Add Images & Descriptions to the Product using SIM

If you have Citrus-Lime Supplier Integration Module online, you will be able to import the images and descriptions provided by the Supplier Images and Descriptions if available.

To do this, simply click Get Descriptions & Images from the Supplier Integration Module.

If there is data available, you will see the following window containing the product details: -

4B. Manually Add your own Images & Descriptions

You can write your own product description and add in your own images if you wish.

Click on the tab titled Details

Short Description - This should be something short and snappy, within 148 & 160 characters. This information will not be immediately visible on the product page. It is visible as an image on the front end of your website. Even so, this field is served up to Google, so it does need to be present.

Long Description - The long description can be as long as you like. This information will be present as a piece of text on the product page.

NOTE: You are not able to copy and paste text directly from another website.

If you do this it not only copies the text, but also the invisible formatting in the background of the third party website.

If you wish to take information directly from another website, paste the text into a word document or notepad first and then copy it from your document and paste it into Merchant Tools.

Once that is complete, ensure that you hit Save at the bottom of the page.

To add images to your product, move to the next tab titled Images and upload those required.

You can have a maximum of 13 images, which is usually more than enough!

We recommend having at least 1 image per product, but the more you can upload the better.

If you have imported images using SIM, this is where they will appear.

You can drag the images around and change the order in which they will appear on the product page. Have a play around with it.

    5. Special Fields

The fourth tab is Special Fields

You can add in more technical information into this section, such as technical specifications, Size Guides and embedded YouTube Videos.

This article explains how to add a Size Guide to represent all items across a brand.

You can embed a YouTube video which will be shown on the product page.

Locate the YouTube video and click on Share. Click on Embed and you will be given a URL, as shown in the image below.

Copy the URL and paste it into the field provided in Merchant Tools - See the second image below.

    6. Assign Filters

Now you need to assign filters.

Customers use filters to navigate your website and find the products they are after, so it is vital that they are set correctly.

To do this, you select the tab Assign Filters and use the drop-down menu to put your product into the relevant department, category, etc.

    7. Set Colour Groups

Finally, you should set up Colour Groups for items that are available in different colours.

This article explains how to do this - Merchant Tools - Creating Colour Groups.

    8. Preview the Item

Now everything is set up with your product, you can hit Preview at the top of the page to see the represented on your website.

    This concludes this article.
